Research Engineering jobs

Research engineers build the machinery that lets researchers move: training frameworks, eval harnesses, data pipelines, and the internal tools that turn a messy idea into a launched experiment by Friday. At most labs the line between RE and RS has blurred into a hiring formality, but the engineering-first version of the role remains its own craft.

The bar is systems fluency — distributed training, GPU utilization, storage throughput — plus the patience to productionize code written by someone thinking about something else. Kubernetes, Ray, and Slurm come up constantly; so does profiling. For strong engineers without publication records, this is the most accessible way into a frontier lab, and the comp gap versus research science has mostly closed.
