AI research roles split into pretraining, post-training, and a growing everything-else: interpretability, multimodal, agents, synthetic data. The line between Research Scientist and Research Engineer has mostly dissolved — everyone writes distributed training code now, and "Member of Technical Staff" is doing a lot of work as a title.

The toolkit is JAX or PyTorch at scale, CUDA when the kernels matter, and a working relationship with RLHF and its many successors. Fair warning on remote: frontier labs still like people near the cluster and the whiteboard, so fully-remote research seats are rarer than in engineering. Compensation is famously strong and famously unpublished.
